Proper Footwear Supports Healthy Feet

Proper Shoes Help Seniors Stay Healthy and Independent

Our feet change as we get older. Shoes that once fit well can start to rub, pinch, slip, or cause new pressure areas. Sometimes it happens gradually. You try to put on your favorite shoes and they feel tighter than you remember. Or your slipper slides off your heel. Your toes feel compressed. That pesky callus keeps cropping up in the same spot.

Properly fitting shoes matter for seniors for many reasons. Shoes are an important part of keeping feet healthy, staying mobile, balancing easily, preventing falls, and staying independent longer.

At Sole Renewal RN Foot Care, we know healthy feet = healthy aging! That’s why we emphasize prevention through routine foot care AND education about how shoes can impact seniors’ feet.

Why Do Shoe Fit & Shoes Matter?
Our feet do a lot of work every day. They help support our weight, absorb pressure, keep us balanced, and help us move safely in and around our homes, vehicles, and communities.

When shoes don’t fit correctly, feet often suffer the consequences.

Tight shoes may squeeze toes, rub the skin, increase pressure, or contribute to the development of corns, calluses, blisters, ingrown toenails, and painful areas. Loose shoes may allow the foot to slide back and forth, causing excess friction and making walking feel awkward or unstable. Shoes without support may contribute to balance issues and a lack of confidence while walking, particularly for seniors who already have arthritis symptoms, neuropathy, swelling, weakness, or changes to their natural walking rhythm or gait.

You may be surprised to learn that shoe size can change throughout life. Aging, changes in weight, swelling, arthritis, bunions, hammertoes, and even changes in arch height can alter the length, width, and shape of the foot. Simply put, just because someone wore a size 8 (or whatever size) for decades doesn’t necessarily mean that size will still fit best now.

Shoes Can Affect Foot Health

Ill-fitting shoes can cause problems that may worsen over time.
That itchy spot where your shoe rubs? Wearing that shoe may cause that area to develop into a callus. That painful spot on your toe? It could be irritated or hurt by a shoe that’s too narrow in the toe box. That thick toenail? Could be pressing against the top of your shoe. That loose shoe? Could cause your foot to grip harder or slide with each step, leading to discomfort, instability, or even skin breakdown.

For seniors with diabetes or poor circulation, shoes are even more crucial to foot health. If shoes do not fit well or create pressure/rubbing spots, they could create a sore on the foot that is not immediately noticeable. If that area is not caught early, it could turn into something more serious.

Shoes Can Impact Fall Risk, Too.

Did you know that footwear can also impact your balance? Shoes that are backless slippers, flip flops, too loose, have slick soles, or lack secure fasteners can make walking feel less stable. Throw in high heels and the risks of ankle rolls or unpredictable footing increase even more.

Some seniors start wearing soft, worn slippers around the house because they’re easier to slip on and off. The problem? They may not offer much support, traction, or heel security, which can cause problems with balance when walking.

Shoes that fit well should help your feet feel supported and stable. They shouldn’t slide around, pinch, flop, or cause you to feel awkward while walking. When footwear is comfortable and feels stable, it can make walking feel safer—which may encourage seniors to move more.

And movement is important! Staying active helps maintain strength, circulation, balance, confidence, and independence.

What Shoes Should Seniors Wear?

Shop for shoes with:
Wide, roomy toe box so toes aren’t squeezed
Secure closure like laces, Velcro, or adjustable straps
Low, broad heel for stability
Firm heel counter to keep heel secured in place
Slip-resistant sole with good traction
Depth to prevent pressure on thickened nails/toes
Soft interior with minimal seams that might rub the skin
Arch support and sole cushioning without being overly heavy
Cushioned, supportive sole that promotes comfortable walking
Wearing comfortable shoes that support walking is one of the best options for seniors. Shoes should fit comfortably when you walk, not just when you’re sitting. They should also be worn with clean socks that fit well and don’t bunch, squeeze toes, or leave deep marks on the legs.

Try to avoid backless slippers, flip flops, high heels, shoes with slick soles, shoes that are too narrow for your feet, and shoes that have seen better days.

Learn About Your Foot Size at Sole Renewal RN Foot Care

New patients at Sole Renewal RN Foot Care receive a foot size assessment because we believe proper shoe fit is important to overall foot health.

During this process, we take a look at your foot size, fit, comfort level, areas of pressure, and what the shoes look like when they’support the client’ foot. We will also evaluate the feet for any skin changes, calluses/corns, nail issues, swelling, redness, or other areas that may be CAUSED or worsened by footwear.

Our goal is not to judge anyone’ shoes. Our goal is to educate, prevent issues whenever possible, and help clients make choices that will benefit their comfort and safety.

Often changing to a shoe with a wider toe box, adding a supportive insole, or replacing worn out shoes can reduce pressure and make walking feel more comfortable If patients have special footwear needs, require diabetic shoes, orthotics, or more advanced care we may suggest follow-up with their podiatrist or another qualified healthcare provider.
